İKSV organized many internationally acknowledged, annualized events in various forms of performing art. Festivals: The first International Istanbul Festival, organized in 1973 on the 50th Anniversary of the Foundation of the Turkish Republic, focused mainly on music. Soon after, it included other artistic fields in its programme such as film screenings, theatre productions, jazz and ballet performances, and art exhibitions held in historic venues. As public interest grew, groups of events organized in different artistic disciplines gradually evolved into distinct festivals. The Istanbul bienal was first organized in 1987, film and theatre festivals began in 1989 and in 1994 a distinct jazz festival was organized outside of the music festival. Over the last 36 years, 46385 artists from 107 countries have participated in Istanbul Festivals, featuring over 7000 shows which were viewed by 7 million 442 thousand spectators. Non-festival events: By its 30th anniversary İKSV decided to expand its scope of programs. “October Film Screenings” emerged in 2002 outside of the film festival and the events “Phonem by Miller” and “Minifest” started in 2003. İKSV also organizes a voice competition in the name of Turkey’s premiere diva, Leyla Gencer. The competition is organized in conjuncture with La Scala Theather Performing Arts Academy Foundation. International Events: İKSV started its international events in 2004 with the objective of creating a platform of tolerance and dialogue between East and West. To date, IKSV has organized Turkish culture festivals in Berlin, London, Bruxells, Stuttgart, Amsterdam and Rotterdam. Publications: In February 2007, İKSV has published a limited edition of a book combining the paintings of Burhan Uygur with the poems of Can Yücel.Again in 2007, in the memory of Mevlana’s 800th birthday, the book “Mevlâna Celaleddin Rumi:99 paintings and 99 poems” was published featuring 99 paintings from Ergin İnan and 99 poems of Mevlana selected by literature professor Talat Halman. İKSV also is preparing to publish a book collecting collection of Nazım Hikmet’s selected poems, combining them with Abidin Dino’s desseins. Also again Nazım Hikmet’s well known “Kuva-i Milliye Destanı” will be combined with the paintings of Avni Arbaş in a forthcoming book. Enis Batur is in the process of writing a book about İKSV’s 35 years, to be published in 2008.
